Sustainable tourism can bridge cultural differences and promote understanding. We share the same values. The Welcommon Hostel, an innovative hostel in Athens, with social and econlogical impact is part of this great community of open minded persons.
Dear Friend of Hostelling International USA:
We are living in extraordinary times that are raising uncomfortable, yet critically important, questions about ourselves and our country: how we treat each other, how we are protected from harm, and how we live together. The senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others named and unnamed, pain our hearts and our minds. Our range of emotions – sadness, frustration, anger, fear – comes in part from not knowing where to begin to solve the problem. Yet we all must step up.
Our Hostelling International USA community is purpose-filled. Our focus is bridging cultural differences and promoting understanding. Our hostels and programs engage hundreds of thousands of people each year. Our people are passionate: our staff in their daily delivery of our mission, and our volunteers through their devotion to bringing visitors together.
As individuals, we each have our own story and our own experiences. As a nonprofit educational organization, we aim to be thoughtful in how we embrace the potential for change that our individual differences offer.
We also share a strong common link: travel. Travel connects our experiences with each other. It also equips us with wider perspectives. As travelers, we have seen in other countries the danger of inequality, the oppression of public speech, and the scourges of hunger and poverty – allowing insights into our challenges today.
We stand in solidarity with our Black community and with our communities of color. And while our doors may be closed currently due to COVID, we will:
- Immediately restart our Explore America travel scholarship program. The program, suspended in late March due to COVID-19, awards scholarships to worthy young people who otherwise would not have access to travel and focuses on building cross-cultural awareness within the USA. Even though our hostels are currently closed and travel curtailed, we will make scholarship awards and begin investing in the successful recipients.
- Examine virtual programs we can offer to identify a way for the broader travel community to constructively support change now and into the future.
This is a very painful time for our country and our HI USA community. Thank you for your support and your commitment to cultural exchange through hostelling.
